Quoted from the Mark Joyner site:
If you want to understand why some folks are making a fuss over "Habeas Corpus" these days, here's a little primer.
Habeas Corpus is a legal term that defines the basic right of someone to question why they are being held by the government. If the agency holding someone is presented with a "Writ of Habeas Corpus" the agency must either release the prisoner or present a valid justification for their arrest.
As I understand it, Habeas Corpus rights have been suspended for "unlawful enemy combatants" in the United States per the Military Commissions Act of 2006.
However, the MCA also states that even US citizens can be declared as "unlawful enemy combatants."
Here's where it gets spooky: the power to declare someone as such rests with the Executive Branch (the President) and once declared there is no right of appeal.
In essence, you could be declared an unlawful enemy combatant at the discretion of the President and held forever - without even the right to defend your innocence.
Whatever you think of the current President (it's totally irrelevant), just remember that this power, unless the MCA is overturned, will rest with all future Presidents as well.
Out of all the possible candidates, imagine the one you trust the least. Would you trust them with this power?
And that is why some folks are raising such a fuss.
Are they insane? Are they crazed "Bush Derangement Syndrome" victims with an axe to grind?
Or have they made a valid argument about a major shift that has stripped us of one of our most basic rights?

Sweetness & Light Only Today Please! LOL!
Yesterday was such an aggravating day! You know the type where you have a hundred little petty aggravations that keep piling on on top of the other and by the end of the day, you're ready to rip somebody's head off! It started in the morning when some jackass wanted to cancel his bid on some stuff I have selling on ebay. It was the only high price bid I had and the one I was looking forward to making a nice profit on. Argggh!
.....Various whining and bitching removed....
Anyway, back to the Sweetness & Light. Today is starting on a much more positive note and I'm going to do my damndest to keep it that way! Now I just have to convince myself to get busy and get some work done....with a smile on my face of course!

Happy Happy 2008!!
Well, it seems like everyone has one of these bloggers, so we decided to jump on the bandwagon. Bear with me while I try to sort out how everything works here.
We make our home in Alberta, Canada and share our little house with a variety of fur kids - three dogs (Kishi, Hoochie & Mischief) and 2 cats (Moe & Whisper). It's a bit of a zoo really, but we love animals and take great joy in their presence in our home. Dan has been a finishing carpenter for many years, although he's semi-retired now due to some back issues. For the past several years, I've been selling books & collectibles via the internet. I have my own website, as well as selling on ebay, amazon, etc. Due to work, we spend most of our time in the city, but we also have a small, remote acreage on the North Saskatchewan river and we get out there every chance we get. The dogs would be happier living out there, but the time is not right yet!
It's an extremely balmy winter day here in Alberta, with the temperature sitting around 0 celsius (or 32 Fahreinheit for you Americans)...... in January yet!! Our normal winter temperature for this time of year would be aboout 20-30 degrees colder - so this doesn't bode well for Febrary & March! Winter does not skip Alberta so the very cold weather is yet to come, that's my prediction.
As you can see, winter has not entirely passed us by!
